Adobe have launched a new licensing program aimed at Primary schools and  Secondary schools only (excludes Colleges of Further Education); Under the Adobe Education Enterprise Agreement (Adobe EEA) the goal is to bring widespread Adobe product deployment to educators via a site licence option.

Rather than licensing your school software per device, as has been the case in the past, there is now the option to licence based on your Staff (FTE) count, a great cost saving benefit to Schools with more computers than staff.

There is a minimum requirement of 20+ staff:

And you can work out your staff numbers by using the following calculation:

A further benefit is that schools can now access a new exciting range of products, specifically tailored for the educational environment:

So schools can access some revolutionary new products, such as Muse & Animate software, that were not available before.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to significantly expand your school’s creative abilities under the Adobe EEA program.

Last May, Adobe launched Creative Cloud for individuals; however this licensing model was not suitable for larger teams, as the membership is tied to an individual, rather than an organisation. For example, you may have members of your design team signed up to Creative Cloud, but if they leave, their subscription could leave with them. Adobes newest offering “Creative Cloud for teams” is the solution to this problem.

What is it?

Adobe Creative Cloud for teams is an on-going membership that provides your organisation access the Adobe Creative Suite 6 applications, as well as:

– Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4
– Adobe Acrobat XI software
– Adobe Muse
– Adobe Edge Tools & Services
– And more…

What does this mean?

As a member, you are entitled to download and use new features as they are released; you get the best tools straightaway. Membership also includes online services* for storage and file sharing, tools for collaboration for workgroups, and a new publishing service that will help your organisation stay innovative and competitive.

The benefits?

– Get the world’s best tools at a more affordable price
– Enable team collaboration in your organisation
– Publish apps and websites
– Stay up to date
– Simplified license management
– Gold support (direct from Adobe) (which covers 24/7 phone support, knowledge base, customer support protal and remote access with a 1hr target response time.

How is licensing simplified?

Adobe’s creative cloud is available through the Value Incentive Plan (VIP) which is the new membership-based volume licensing program. It makes is easier to manage, purchase and then assign permission to use Adobe software and services based on declared user ID numbers.

You will be provided with an administrator portal that allows you to see what’s been purchased and deployed and to whom – all within the same interface. Thus, the agreement administrator has full visibility over who is using the subscription and can re-assign an existing subscription to another user (allowed twice per sub per pear).

If you need additional subscriptions, just add them via your portal and get your designer to work straight away. You just need to place an order with Micromail within 30 days of assigning the new sub. Even better, membership also consolidates your seats and products into a single agreement and automatically prorates any additional seats you might add after the initial purchase to a fixed agreement end date.

Is Creative Cloud for teams ready for Education training environments?

At the moment it’s not an offering that can be used in student labs as access to the Cloud tools are tied into individual email addresses (as opposed to per PC). It just can’t be implemented yet, unfortunately. However Adobe will be addressing this issue.

This does not exclude Educational Institutes entirely however; an excellent educational rate of discount is still available which would suit researchers, technicians and other members of staff.

Micromail is an Adobe certified partner and are offering Creative Cloud for teams under the VIP program now

Aside from the host of new features in CS6, what has been the other big development for IT administrators? Without a doubt it’s been the new changes to Creative Suite product activations.

Adobe announced a radical overhaul of their activation process for volume licensing customers with CS6. CS4 & CS5 activated in the background as soon as the software detected an internet connection; so no action was required. CS6, however, requires active registration online or the product will stop working.

Where this has caused problems is in the realm of Enterprise Deployment; those attempting to deploy an image over a network have come across serious activation issues.

Fortunately Adobe offers a free Enterprise Deployment Toolkit (AAMEE) to resolve this problem; it’s effective and easy to use.

You can download this tool here, Adobe have also included a video guide to deployment.

Adobe have announced the long awaited CS6, due to ship on May 7th; and with major changes to upgrade options on the way now is a great time to consider moving up to CS6.

Initial Launch Offer:

Firstly, you can buy CS5/CS5.5 now and get a free upgrade to CS6, up until May 7th; essentially get CS6 at CS5.5 prices!

CS6 Upgrade Policy:

If you have a Suite from one version back (in this case, from CS5 or CS5.5 since CS5.5 was a point release) you will qualify for upgrade pricing to a CS6 suite. Owners of individual CS5 or CS5.5 products also qualify for upgrade pricing to the same product, but can no longer upgrade to a Suite.

Under Adobe’s new policy, any version earlier than CS5 will not be eligible for upgrade pricing. However, Adobe are making a special offer to owners of CS3 and CS4 individual products and suite editions that will give them a temporary upgrade path to CS6 until December 31, 2012. After this date, only customers on CS5 or CS5.5 will qualify for upgrade pricing to CS6.

Recommendations for CS4 and CS3 Users:

If you have CS4 then it is highly recommended that you upgrade now to CS5 and receive a free CS6 upgrade; if you wait until after May 7th you will be upgrading from CS4 to CS6 (two versions back) at a higher cost. Upgrading now could save you hundreds of Euro!

For CS3 users- upgrade before the end of the year or you will be paying full price from 2013 on! For CS2 users, you only have until May 7th to upgrade!

So any questions?

Some good news from Adobe; they have decided to push back their changes to the Upgrade Policy announced before Christmas; so for the rest of 2012 customers WILL be able to upgrade from CS3 & CS4.  The following is from Adobe’s upgrade page:

“To ensure customers have the opportunity to evaluate CS6, Adobe will extend an introductory offer to CS3 and CS4 customers for special upgrade pricing on CS6 until December 31, 2012. This will give CS3 and CS4 customers an upgrade path to CS6. Customers who remain on CS2 or earlier will not be eligible for upgrade pricing for CS6.”

Adobe have announced that CS6 will be launched in the first half of 2012 so all CS2 users should consider upgrading now while they are still within upgrade eligibility. There’s also a 15% upgrade promotion to CS5.5 running until March so there’s never been a better time to upgrade.

by Fionán Ó Cinnéide – Adobe Licensing Specialist

Adobe is completely overhauling their upgrade policy as part of significant licensing changes announced during Adobe Max last month. Once CS6 is launched (expected in 2012, based on previous release patterns) customers will only be allow to upgrade from either CS5 or CS5.5. So those used to upgrading from three versions back will now be faced with the prospect of purchasing a full new licence rather than an upgrade. Read More »
